It’s Max Here! I am a photographer now, but I have an extensive background in modeling. So I always like to drop in explain more about the modeling industry to these people that are new to it, especially if they are from Pittsburgh.

Alright, so a couple things to start.

There are a lot of different types of modeling, in this post I am going to speak primarily about modeling with an agency. Booking commercial and fashion jobs.

So the best play to start is this. Start your portfolio. Start building a really good portfolio. Secondly you should be taking digitals every 6 months.

In regards to modeling agencies specifically in Pittsburgh.

Here are two agencies that you want to try to work with in Pittsburgh. Every other agency I have heard of in Pittsburgh greater area is for the most part a bit of a scam.

1. The Talent Group

2. Docherty

These two agencies have booked huge jobs for models and actors all across PA and Ohio.

Next up, agencies in big markets, a lot of times aspirational models when they think about modeling, are thinking about LA or NYC. This is a totally different ball game, their are a ton of agencies in these cities and you need to be very careful about selecting the right one.

The number one rule for modeling is “your agency or manager should not be making any money unless they get you a job”. The standard industry rate is 20%. Legitimate agencies will take 20% of the money you make when they book you a job.

P.S. - If any agency asks you for money up front, you should steer clear. A legitimate talent agency makes money when you, the talent makes money. I live in the Southside Slopes and my studio is just off of Carson Street. I am more than happy to get you the headshots you need to achieve your dreams of acting or modeling. But wait a second, you are not an actor,? You are a busy professional? I’ve got you covered. My studio is just off of 22nd street and carson street in Pittsburgh, PA. The process is simple ->

1. Consultation - We talk on the phone and I can get a better understanding of what you needs are you, we talk wardrobe and location.

2. The Shoot - We have a blast creating beautiful images of who you are and what you do.

3. The Presentation - We check out all the images we created together and you get to pick out the one’s you’d like to keep. 1. Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens: While it can be a pain in the butt, to actually do portrait photography inside Phipps, the surround area is utterly gorgeous. Right outside of Phipps are cobblestones paths, arched bridges, beautiful greenery and rustic stone structures.

2. The Strip District: This area works really well for professionals and business owner who want a cool city vibe in their photos. If you go to my about page, I took that photo in the strip district. It has a very casual yet cool vibe to it.

3. In Our Studio: I love using our studio in Braddock as well as OPYA in Southside. It has nice rich tones and beautiful light, and guess what, we don’t have to worry if it rains!
